The GMC Yukon XL is the answer to the question of "what do I buy when I need to seat up to nine passengers, their luggage, and also tow a small country?" The king-size SUV was all-new for 2015, so there are no significant changes for 2016. SLT and up get a hands-free tailgate, and there is an improved driver alert package. The Yukon XL is a big, heavy truck, and it feels like it on the road. The Ford Expedition EL is the only thing close to it in size, but is a much older design and comes only with a 3.5L V6.
The Yukon XL gets a choice of two engines. The base is a 355 hp 5.3L V8 with direct injection and variable displacement. Denali gets a 420 hp 6.2L version of the same engine. Both come with a six-speed automatic transmission and rear- or four-wheel drive. Base SLE trim gets front and rear park assist (with rear camera), a Bose stereo, 8.0-inch touchscreen, OnStar, a locking rear differential, 18-inch wheels, automatic lights and wipers, remote start, keyless entry, and three-zone climate control. A trailer pack is optional with brake controller and rear air-springs. Convenience pack comes with power adjustable pedals, and power liftgate. Driver alert package gets collision monitoring, a seat that will vibrate to let you know you're leaving your lane, and auto high-beams.
SLT adds power adjustable pedals, blind spot warning, push-button start, wireless charging, leather wheel, heated and cooled front seats, power lift gate, driver alert package, power folding mirrors, power tilt wheel, heated second row seats, lane guidance, and rear cross-traffic alert. A power sunroof is optional, as is navigation. A premium package comes with 22-inch wheels, chrome mouldings, grille, and exhaust tip.
Top-trim Denali adds a full leather interior and aluminium trim. There is contrasting stitching on the seats, real wood accents, triple sealed doors, power fold second row, keyless entry, and 20-inch wheels. Navigation is standard, and a head-up display is available. Along with the bigger engine, Denali has magnetic shocks to constantly adjust the suspension.
Yukon XL is rated at 15.1 L/100 km city, 10.4 highway. Four-wheel drive versions get 15.4/10.8. Denali gets 16.4/11.7 city/highway.
